Every time I say the word “appetizers” all I can think of is The Office episode where Michael Scott is at David Wallace’s cocktail party where he and Jan announce they are a couple. It’s SO AWKWARD and so awesome. Jan is so uncomfortable and Michael prounounces that he could go for an “appe-teaser”. Can’t remember if that’s before or after he has everyone smell the candles on the mantel. Just a side note…if you aren’t a fan of The Office, you’re missing out.
But on to the food….Aren’t the holidays the perfect time for snack food? Seriously, I will always tell you that Robert and I are the king and queen of snacks. The ultimate purveyors of appe-teasers! The quintessential curators of aperitifs. We take our finger food VERY seriously, and we can put them down like nobody’s business. Don’t invite us to your party, we will eat all your snacks. Actually, please do, and we will try not to 😉
And some of the best appetizers are wrapped in bacon. Prove me wrong.
Sorry, not sorry. Y’all know it’s true. Here’s a great appetizer you can make over the holidays. Have as a brunch item on a lazy holiday morning or even include as a main dish for a meal.
These Bacon Wrapped Stuffed Sausage Balls are best smoked (I smoked them on our Traeger) but you can make them in the oven and they’ll still be great! I use 1/2 slice of bacon on each sausage ball. They are stuffed with mushrooms, onions, and cheese. What could be better! A great addition to your holiday menu…try them out!

Bacon Wrapped Stuffed Sausage Balls
Ingredients
- 1 small package mushrooms chopped
- 1 medium onion chopped
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp pepper, garlic powder and (optional) Trader Joe's Umami seasoning
- 2 lbs Italian sausage
- 4 oz crumbled blue cheese
- 4 oz cream cheese
- 8-10 slices bacon
Instructions
- In a large skillet melt 3 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add in chopped mushrooms and onions and season with salt, pepper, garlic powder and whatever else you choose (I use Umami seasoning from Trader Joe's)Cook until the onions become soft and translucent. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. While still warm, add in the softened cream cheese and blue cheese. Keep stirring until you have a well-blended mixture.Cover and set in fridge for at least half an hour to set.Meanwhile, cut bacon strips in half. Set aside. Then, divide each pound of sausage into about 8-10 sections (I usually get 8). Flatten each section on a cutting board to make a thin patty. When the filling has set, remove from fridge and put a small amount in the middle of each sausage patty. Then roll up the sides of each one and inch together, roll, shape and smooth out each sausage ball. After the sausage balls are put together, stretch each slice of bacon a bit with your hands and carefully wrap it around each sausage ball.Set in a baking dish with the ends of the bacon (bottom of the sausage ball) facing down.Set in 325 degree smoker or oven for 35-45 minutes or until golden brown.Would be great served with mustard, ranch, or bbq sauce!
