Spotlight: Lemon Essential Oil

TWIGYsFREEoils-2-29-1024x684Lemon essential oil is a versatile oil to keep on hand in every room of the house.  In “The Healing Power of Essential Oils” by Eric Zielinski he says that “Nearly seven hundred studies have examined lemon essential oil, exploring dozens of traditional uses.  Its most prominent component, d-limonene, is likely the key to its potency.”

It’s a cost-effective oil that has endless practical uses.  Here are just some of the ways you can use it:

Diffuse – on it’s own or in a diffuser blend, lemon has an uplifting aroma that can subtly brighten a room

Cleaning and home maintenance:  Lemon essential oil can be added to homemade cleaning solutions and is a powerful de-greaser.  You can add it to a steam mop or spray mop, and spray cleaner to add a de-greasing boost.  You can put a drop on an air purifier filter to help freshen the air.

In the kitchen:  Add dimension to your favorite dish.  Add two drops of lemon essential oil to 1/2 cup of white vinegar to a large bowl, add your fruits and vegetables and then fill to the top with water to rinse them of residue after you come home from the store.  Rinse under running water, let dry and store for super clean, ready-to-eat produce.

Enhance your water:  I drink a glass of water with a drop of lemon every morning when I wake up.  It’s uplifting and hydrating.  Dr. Axe has an article where he discusses some of the benefits of ingesting essential oil for metabolism and overall health.  See the article here.

*An important note about lemon essential oil:  it has phototoxic properties – meaning it can cause the skin to be sensitive to sunlight for a time after applied to the skin.  So, if you use it on or skin or in any homemade skin care products, you shouldn’t expose your skin to direct sunlight for 12 hours after application.

I use lemon essential oil every day!  Read HERE about which essential oils I use and why!  Or to get started with essential oils.
