Now, we start to work.

I don’t watch much TV, and when I do it seems to be the same reruns all the time… The Office (yeeeeesh…) and the same chick flicks over and over.  And I love Parenthood.  It’s so real.  There is an episode in Season 1 when Max gets his Asperger’s diagnosis.  Adam (dad) asks Kristina (mom), “what do we do now?”, to which she replies, “Now, we start to work”.  I love that line, because it says perfectly how I feel these days.  She knows the road ahead is long and tedious, but she wants to do everything in her power to help her son.  And that how I feel, for all my kids, but most particularly for my son.

At the beginning of this year we were headed towards an Autism diagnosis – they said “he has the symptoms – try these therapies and come back in a year…”  My son, Robbie, is BRILLIANT, loving, caring, helpful, courageous, and funny.  But we’ve had some speech and behavioral issues that needed to be addressed.

After watching a Docuseries by Dr. Mark Hyman, MD I am absolutely convinced that I have a huge element of control over this situation, and that I can HELP my son by finding out what is off balance in his body and correcting the issue to help him become an extremely high functioning person.  Detox and diet changes were at the top of the list.

That same week, we had one day at school so bad that I had to pick him up early.  I decided that enough was enough and I immediately took him off gluten, sugar, food coloring, and screen time.  We got outdoors twice as much and organized our time in a way that kept his wiggly little body busy learning and playing.  And…we haven’t had one bad day since.  We still have alot to do and accomplish, but I feel hopeful.

I am so encouraged by the information I have been finding in my research and know it’s my duty to share so that I can help another tired and frustrated mom.  Our children are such blessings, no matter what their age or stage in development – and if we can do things differently to help them, we should!

But, wellness should be accessible to EVERYONE.  If I can help my son, I can help the rest of my family (including myself) achieve optimal health.
